Silviculture, or the way we grow trees, is certainly important to the vitality of our forests. However, a working knowledge of genetics is equally important in helping forest managers make the right decisions for improving growth in our forests and ensuring conservation of our native tree populations.

We are the Alberta Forest Genetic Resources Council. Our goal in this part of the website is to improve understanding of how genetics influence coniferous tree improvement, deciduous tree improvement, and the general reforestation, diversity and conservation of Alberta’s trees and forests.

This influence is important to forest practitioners in their daily work, and to the Albertans they serve as professionals.

Council members are leaders in tree breeding and forest management in Alberta. We have also drawn upon other leaders in the science community to help make our educational tools as complete and useful as possible.

We plan to build up a functioning educational resource or “toolkit” over the course of 2009, and will continue to add material to these web pages in the future, as finances allow.

Please contact AFGRC if you have comments or feedback of any kind.
